Captain J. J. chucki Smith , a native of Bedford, New York, received his commission and Bachelor of Science degree in Operations Analysis from the United States Naval Academy in 1973. Following flight training, Captain Smith earned his wings in 1974 and reported to the Gunfighters of VF 124 for transition to the F 14 Tomcat . His next tour brought him to VF 33 as part of carrier air wing 7 aboard USS ENTERPRISE CVN 65 , where he completed a Western Pacific and Indian Ocean WESTPAC IO deployment.In February 1978, he was selected to be an instructor in graduate level tactics at the Naval Fighter Weapons School, known as Top Gun . He flew several aggressor aircrafts, including the F 5E F Tiger II and the A 4E Skyhawk.Following his instructor tour, Captain Smith returned to the fleet with the Renegades of VF 24. He completed another WESTPAC IO deployment aboard USS CONSTELLATION CV 64, as well as a Central American WESTPAC IO cruise on USS RANGER CV 61. During that time, he was selected as the Tailhook Association's West Coast Fighter Pilot of the Year.In September 1984, Captain Smith reported to the Evaluators of VX 4 at NAS Point Mugu, California, flying both the F 14 and newer F A 18 Hornet. His next tour returned him to the Naval Fighter Weapons School , attached to Oceana NAS as part of the 4477th Test and Evaluation Squadron, flying several kinds of aircraft in support of multi service operational training.In 1988, Captain Smith reported as the Executive Officer of the VF 84 Jolly Rogers aboard USS THEODORE ROOSEVELT CVN 71. After completing the carrier's maiden Mediterranean deployment, he assumed command of VF 84 in March 1990 and led the squadron through combat operations during DESERT SHIELD , DESERT STORM , and PROVIDE COMFORT. In June 1992, Captain Smith was selected to participate in the Navy's Nuclear Power Program. He reported to the Navy Nuclear Power School, Orlando, Florida in November 1992, and upon successful completion of 20 months of rigorous study, he assumed the duties as Executive Officer, USS NIMITZ CVN 68 in July 1994. Captain Smith subsequently assumed command of the USS JUNEAU LPD 10 on 21 June 1996. Following successful tours on both NIMITZ and JUNEAU, Captain Quinn assumed command of USS ABRAHAM LINCOLN CVN 72 on April 5, 1997. Over the length of his career Captain Smith has accumulated over 4,800 flight hours and 870 carrier landings in a number of fighter aircraft. His other personal decorations include the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star, two Meritorious Service Medals, four Air Medals 2 Individual with Combat V 2 Strike Flight, and four Navy Commendation Medals 2 with Combat V. Captain Smith retired from active duty, to take a teaching job at the local high school town. Occasionally he is been called for special intelligent work around the world.
